I’ve spent my entire career in health care. First in a small doctor’s office. Later at a large, nationally known teaching hospital. And now, in the pharmaceutical industry. For me, helping to find a cure for the various illnesses that plague mankind was never a question of ‘if’, but ‘how’.

Approximately 6.5 million people have Parkinson’s. 1 in 10 are diagnosed before they turn 50. But it’s not just a disease affecting your parents and grandparents, 15% of all Parkinson’s patients are diagnosed before their 40th birthday.

Parkinson’s is a degenerative CNS disorder that impairs motor skills and cognitive processes. There is no cure and no known definitive test used to diagnose.

Most common presenting systems are: tremor, rigidity, and slowness. Once diagnosed, the Parkinson’s patient may also experience: joint pain, difficulty sleeping, trouble walking, executive dysfunction, and dementia,

Imagine being in your sixties. You’ve finally reached retirement age, you’re in your Golden Years. However, instead of being able to enjoy everything you’ve spent your life working for, you’re hit with a PD diagnosis. Now your days are spent worrying if you will become a burden for your spouse and children. You wonder if there will come a day when you forget who they are.

Or imagine you’re one of the 15%. Your children are still young, you’re still working your way up the corporate ladder, you have your whole life in front of you. And one day you’re cooking dinner, but your hand won’t work. . .

Kat knows all about Parkinson’s Disease. Her father-in-law was diagnosed last year. Matter of fact, you can read about how this disorder has affected many people in the fandom, here.

In late 2010, the fight to find a cure for Parkinson’s became more important than ever to me. But you won’t find my story on Kat’s blog. The wound for me is still too fresh, too raw.

So for now, I’m doing what I can. I’m brushing off my characters from The Submissive, The Dominant, and The Training. I’m writing a futuretake I get the most requests for: Pregnant subBella.

Contributions will be accepted through 31Mar2011 here and the compilation will be available on 1Mar2011. You would have my unending gratitude and thanks if you’re able to contribute in any way.

First let me say I am sorry for your pain.. And for Kat. My father too had Parkinson's although it mostly at the end of his life so he didn't suffer great from it. I will however be happy to contribute. I would anyway, but you dusting off your characters is such a added bonus! I love and miss them much! :) I'm headed out but will leave the up to remember when I get back!

Tara,

You already know how much I love your characters (and you), but it should be said again! I think they are some of the most enduring and memorable characters in FFn-land.

I wanted to post and encourage people to donate for the compilation. Even though I'm privileged enough to be your beta, and thus have already read your piece, I look forward to reading the others. I also think this is a very worthy organization, so was proud to put some money where my mouth is.

I am so thankful you are doing this! My dad has recently been diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease (along with Agent Orange poisoning) and it is so heartbreaking to watch my Strong Army man be affceted by this disease. I will definately be contributing and looking forward to reading!
